The greater part of this Centennial edition book is pictorially told and is the story of the far-flung Southern Pacific Railroad system that dominates the West Coast of the United states from Oregon to Los Angles and then heads across Texas and the Deep Southwest and of the Central pacific Railroad that was its earlier component. It is the story of romantic yesterdays in Utah, Nevada and California in the age of the swaggering railroad builders and moguls of transport who later became virtuosos of operational technique, whose ultimate masterpieces were the great trains of the West. This book contains 900 illustrations - 7 pictures in full color, maps and memorabilia as well as many rare and hitherto unpublished photographs of construction times in Utah and Nevada, stunning action photos from the turn of the century and a voluminous portrait gallery of the crack flyers and candy trains of bygone days. This 1963 First Edition book contains 631 pages, measures 9" in width by 11 1/4" tall and 1 1/2" thick was published by Howell-North Books, Berkeley California. Except for some very slight rubbing along the front edges of the dust jacket this book is in near fine condition with all the pages intact, tight, bright and clean.
