Nothing less than the entire panorama of overland travel in the railroad age has been contemplated by the authors of this book. Special emphasis is laid in the field of long distance travel where luxury equipment was taken for granted and where the amenities of life aboard the cars most closely approximated that in the grand hotels of the same period. Depots and railroad personnel other than those actively concerned with the operations of trains have been explored both editorially and photographically. Name trains with picture material never before included in books by the authors, and a number of hitherto unexplored avenues of transport such as the institutional Fall River Boat Train, The Dude Flyer over the Old Colony to Woods Hole and Rip Van Winkle Flyer serving the storied Catskills. Not neglected are the great railroad terminals of the land and there are rare and hitherto unpublished photographs at historic periods of the South Station in Boston, the first Union Depot at Chicago and Grand Central Terminal and embraces the mainline carriers of the land from from Alton through New York Central. This 1965 First Edition book contains 465 pages, measures 9" in width by 11 1/4" tall and 1 1/4" thick. It contains 801 illustrations - 6 in full color and 5 new paintings by Howard Fogg. This book was published by Howell-North Books, Berkeley, California. Except for some slight rubbing along the upper edges of the front of the dust jacket this book is in near fine condition with all the pages intact, tight, bright and clean
