A magnificently detailed book in photographic essay form that deals with the American railroad as it has undergone one of its most singular transition sine the first steel rail was laid in the North American continent. Among the more than 200 photographs, nearly all of which were taken by the author, are those of the last days of the steam locomotive, more affectionately known as the Iron Horse (including at steam engine funeral possession), the early first-generation
diesels, experimental high-speed passenger trains, modern freight-cars, and the mighty third-generation diesels. This 1968 First Edition book contains 260 pages, measures 9 1/4" in width by 12 1/4" tall and was published by A.S. Barnes and Company Inc., New York. Except for two tears along the upper edges of the dust jacket this book is in near fine condition with all the pages intact, tight, bright and clean.
