BECAUSE WE CAN
Choreographers: Sasha Kleinplatz and Andrew Tay Dancers: Andrew Tay, Livia Pellerin, Amanda Wurts Original Music: vitaminsforyou Lighting: Paul Chambers Rehearsal Director: Helen Simard Costumes: Yso
For their first creation as an official company, Wants&Needs dance take an unapologetic look at the world of the drunk. Focused around three lost souls on one debaucherous night, Because We Can examines our love of drink: its ceremony, its pleasure, and its danger.
Starting with one lonely drink, the work portrays a series of striking images of intoxication, gradually descending the trio of young friends into deeper levels of inebriation.
An examination of the mental state of euphoria and its ability to shed the inhibitions of those whom it affects, Because We Can allows the spectator a voyeuristic view into what transpires as the trio slowly lose control. Blurring the line between fun and insanity, friendships are pushed to the limits of what is acceptable and relationships shift into places they probably should not go.
Accompanied by an original music score by acclaimed intr_version recording artist vitaminsforyou (recently nominated for the Quark International music prize). His stark and emotive composition marks his fifth collaboration with the choreographers of Wants&Needs Danse and provides the perfect rhythmic counterpart to this night of reckless abandon.
Not trying to pass judgment on the life of the young hedonist, Because We Can instead asks the spectator to draw their own conclusions after having a glimpse into their strange and confusing world.
