Hand Made Military Mess Box

If only this box could talk! Its battlefield stories would fill a book. This wonderful metal box was hand made with great care as is evidenced from the brass fittings on the edges and brass sunburst star on the top. Inside, on top is three rounded holders for either cutlery, if this was used as a mess kit (or possibly for ammunition). The holder on the inside bottom probably kept a cup or bottle in place so that a soldier could eat on a hill or in a trench. Every instant might have been his last-so every article he carried was essential and meaningful to him.

The box is in amazingly good shape, but there is some rust, especially inside, as would be expected from something of its age and history.

The box measures 9" by 7" by 3 1/2"
