What a magnificent find for collectors of Theodore Haviland, railroadiana and hotel ware china and porcelain. This very rare and almost impossible to find magnificent porcelain coffee pot was manufactured by Theodore Haviland and supplied by Porter & Co., Winnipeg to The Fort Gary Hotel which was owned by the Grand Trunk Railroad before the First World War. This coffee pot with such a immaculate gold frontmark bearing the insignia of The Fort Garry Hotel and cobalt around the rim and 22 karat gold plated handle and pouring spout measures 5" in height and is in absolute mint condition with no chips, cracks, crazing, repairs or signs of ware to the pattern. The backmark of this coffee pot reads "Expressly Made by Theodore Haviland - France for Fort Garry Hotel - Supplied by Porter & Co., Winnipeg"
The Fort Garry Hotel is designated as a national historic site. Since 1913 this former Grand Trunk Pacific Railway hotel stood as a symbol of Winnipeg's importance as a North American transportation hub and of the prairie city's affinity for old world elegance. One of Winnipeg's most prestigious landmarks, The Fort Garry is now in its 10th decade. The Fort Garry has defined the Winnipeg skyline for over 90 years. The Grand Trunk Pacific Railway decided to build The Fort Garry in 1911 when it completed the link between its east and west lines. The chosen on Broadway Avenue was just one block from the railway's Union Station. The hotel is Winnipeg's best example of the chateau style of architecture which first found expression in the magnificent railway hotels built across Canada before 1930.
