This, that and the other........ Take a peek!
Shown on page 51 of W. Allison Burnette's "The Collector's Guide to the Small Erwin Tennessee Area Potteries".
Negatha's painting on this platter depicts the Southern Pottery Company of Erwin TN as it was in 1916.
Southern Potteries later became Blue Ridge Pottery where Negatha was hired as a painter and decorator. The Blue Ridge Pottery Company went out of business in 1957. Negatha and her husband opened the Erwin Pottery in 1958. We are not sure of the exact year that she painted this tray.
Negatha retired and sold her business some years ago after her husband passed away.
Our platter has three Erwin Pottery stamped marks on the back and her initials with them: N.P. Measures a bit more than 16" by 12".
No chips or cracks. The pottery is uneven in some places giving it a primitive feel. The painting is magnificent with bright, clear and beautiful colors under a sheer coat of glaze.
A wonderful piece of Folk Art!
