This, that and the other........ Take a peek!
Albert R. Valentien was born in 1862 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Valentien was hired in 1881 as the first salaried decorator at the Rookwood Pottery. He worked 24 years at Rookwood as chief decorator and artistic director. His work is in the collections of London's Victoria and Albert Museum, the Luxembourg in Paris and the Royal Industrial Art Museum in Berlin.
Valentien and his wife made a trip to California in 1908 where he fell in love with the state's plants and flowers. He was commissioned to paint a complete series of California wild flowers by San Diego philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps. Valentine created more than 1000 illustrations of California's beautiful wild flowers.
Decorating this handsome matte vase are very pale pink wild roses, buds and trailing green leaves hand painted in relief. There is some gold paint around the top of the vase and in places around the back. Also, check the photos for the wonderful warm orange glow around the lower portion of this classic piece.
I love to run my fingers over the raised, textured paint and think about the pride Mr. Valentien took in his work.
Remarkable condition without chips or cracks. I see no crazing. Bottom shows shelf wear.
