Antique missal is so fantastic, with its opening page that appears to be hand calligraphed and is dated Enero 1 de 1893 (January 1, 1893), its text in Latin American Spanish, lovely little illustrations throughout...it's just so sweet.

I don't know a lot about it but what I do know is that it originally had a badly damaged tortoise shell cover that was removed by the person I got it from so as not to cause damage to the underlying missal. I've seen others similar to this one that had leather covers. It has what I believe is a silk cover over cardboard (a tiny piece of which is missing by one of the original hinges, as well as a 3/4" long x 3/16" wide piece on the back), which protects the yes, fragile, but surprisingly still-strong gilt edged pages. The ribbon to mark your page--also silk I think--is still present, albeit not attached.

I don't speak Spanish so I had to rely on a translation site to figure out not only what it says, but to identify the language itself. From my research I found the language is identified as Latin American Spanish, which distinguishes it from other Spanish-speaking countries not in Latin America. I didn't of course translate the entire book but parts of the right side of the gallery pic page (contents page) translate to English as follows: El Oficio del Domingo = The Office of the Sunday. las oraciones y ejercicios para asistir al sacrificio de la Santa Misa, las Visperas, etc. = prayers and exercises to assist the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, Vespers, etc. Nueva Edicion = New Edition, and Tornai (Belgica) and Editores Pontificios translate respectively as Tornai (Belgium) and Papal Publishers.

Condition of this precious little booklet is ... miraculous, frankly, given its age. A couple of the pages have small tears which don't go into or even anywhere near the text, and as already mentioned the original cover is gone, tiny pieces of fabric are missing, and the page-marker ribbon is unattached. Price reflects these relatively minor flaws.

Wouldn't it be fun to create a "personalized" cover for this beauty, truly make it your own?

Measures 6" high x 3" wide x just shy of 1/2" thick. Really fabulous addition to your religious collection! (Packaged weight is 6 ozs. from zip code 55409)
