"Agnes Mills is still one of the very best of the WPA Artists", according to the members and officers of the WPA Artists Association. WPA Artist Agnes Mills (n.1917-d.2008) was appointed to the projects right out of Cooper Union and was immediately assigned to projects that are now in the Library of Congress and the Metropolitan Museum. The index of American Design, for which she made drawings, is in the Smithsonian. She painted a mural for the Brooklyn museum and later went on to paint Post Offices and other public buildings all over the US. In the fifties, while preparing for her first "one man" show at the prestigious Alfredo Valente Gallery in Manhattan, Henryk Heydenryk, whose frames adorn some of the world's greatest art treasures , was so impressed by Agnes Mills that volunteered to make the 20 very expensive frames that she required for her show in exchange for one of her bronzes. Agnes Mills credits continued with her dance series: the Nikolais Dance Group, Alvin Ailey, Martha Graham, Paul Taylor, and Murray Lewis. On the day before her death this year, at age 91, she painted a water color of her caretaker. This is one of Agnes Mills' torsos from her own collection. Exciting with a creative tension. Unnumbered torso 10-1/2" high - measurement is for the bronze only. I will add the height of the base shortly. Width at shoulders is 5-1/2 inches. "Split" torso with the top of the torso fragmented instead of fully articulated. Legs are separate and one of the legs extends over the base. Very appealing. The bronze moves ever so slightly in its wooden base. It cannot be removed and is securely attached to the pedestal. There is a small chip in the base at one of the edges. Cracks in the honey-colored wooden base are about 1" deep. Ms. Mills' larger works are signed. I do not see a signature on her smaller bronzes. This is a consignment item from a private client who knew Ms. Mills personally and actually posed for some of her works. So. please purchase with confidence.
