A rare and unusual find! French 1840's silk mourning panels, one depicting HRH Prince Ferdinand Philippe of Orleans, the other J.M. Jacquard, the inventor of the jacquard loom. These silk mourning panels were offered at Christie's in South Kensington last fall. I've included the page from the Christie's South Kensington Fine European Costume and Textiles catalogue with the estimate. These two panels are being sold as a pair. One price. Each panel measures 4.5 by 7 inches. Some minor soiling and staining has been photographed for you. There are some creases that undoubtedly were from years of storage. That they survived at all is somewhat miraculous. Quite the collector's item, they are beautifully done. The photos do not do them justice. The moire quality of the silk makes it difficult to capture the intensity of the images. Prince Ferdinand Philippe almost looks like a photograph when you see it in person. It's amazing to see on the back how these images were woven in silk.
