This is the largest model of this type of viewer, which holds 200 stereoviews on a rotating belt and is relatively uncommon.
Cosmetically, the polished oak body is complete and in excellent condition, with some minor rubbing in places and a negligible amount of shrinkage in one small area in the lower rear panel joint. There is a drawer at the base of the viewer.
All the lenses are original and clean, with the focussing mechanism working smoothly. The stereo pair produce a correct stereo image with all types of stereoviews and stereocards.
The lacquered brass fittings are all in good condition, with no damage, but some tarnishing, as you would expect in an instrument of this age.
The ebonised eyepieces have some minor cracking and all the other knobs show some signs of use, but this is very minor considering the age.
The hinged lid has the original mirror, which is in very good condition.
The internal rotating mechanism is all metal and in excellent, smooth, working condition. The wire stereocard holders are all complete and undamaged.
This is a beautiful vintage item, both to look at and use and we would say 9/10 was a fair guide to its condition, considering its age.
These viewers were made in limited numbers between 1890 and the early part of the 20th Century. This one was made for Sir William Crookes, and has come from his estate. It was probably one of the most expensive at the time.
An engraved makers plaque ' W I Chadwick, 2 St Mary's Street, Manchester', is applied to the front.
