It is made from polished brass, which is lacquered to produce a fine finish. In the main the condition is excellent, with very little tarnishing, and no physical damage.
It has only two sections. The top tube slides out for focussing and is engraved 2,3,4,5,7,10 and D to indicate the objective distance, for effective drawing.
The prism and hinged filter are both clear, unmarked and function correctly.
It comes in its original velvet lined fishskin box, which is also in very good condition
It is marked 'Cary, London' on the prism mount. One of the original suppliers of Camera Lucida authorised in the early 1800s. The example was probably made between 1830 and 1840, but could be even earlier.
A scarce and beautiful example of a very useable optical instrument.
