This is a copy of the famous Edwin Landseer painting 'Saved', which was also the subject of a Currier and Ives engraving. See details on one of the images.
The panel is generally in good condition, but with some scuffing and indentations to the woodwork and some staining to the polished finish on the surround. This is only due to age and is not untypical for this type of item.
The hand carving itself is in excellent condition and although the carver is unknown, it is very well executed and is a faithful copy of the original, with some additional artistic license, which must have been done by a professional of the day.
The original centre piece is very accurate and the additions in the background are the lifeboat station, lighthouse and ships, including the capsized vessel, which complete the whole scene.
A fine antique carving, which would be of interest to collectors of maritime pictures, Newfoundland dog ephemera and general collectors of wood carvings
Overall Size approx 28x14x1ins (72x37x2.5cms) Size of centre carving 16x11ins (28x41cms)
