It is elaborately designed as a heavily moulded arch with columns supporting a pierced pediment, flanked by floral pillaster and scrolled borders. The top is surmounted by a knight's helmet.
It is all in exceptionally fine condition, with no damage or cracks of any kind.
The front of the stand houses a brass thermometer marked in Centigrade.
The rear of the piece is plain, with a hanging ring at the top and a hinged support, which I suspect is an addition and was not on the original piece.
This is an very rare item and although I have seen many things made from bois durci or gutta percha, this is a first.
A very attractive and interesting item, which will be of interest to collectors of thermoplastic, thermometers or scientific instruments.
