From the late 1850s or early 1860s, the image shows a smartly dressed boy standing next to a table. It is an intriguing image, as the mortar board appears to be a correct fit, so it seems an unusual outfit for a young boy to wear. It may be that he went to a private school and this was their uniform.
It is sharp and strong, with excellent contrast and detail, although there are some scratches to the image and some discolouration around the edges.
The image is mounted in an original leather covered 1/2 case with a floral mat and keeper, which is overglazed. The condition shows some wear and tear.
There is no indication of the subject nor the photographer.
A good sized, well executed ambrotype.
