A pair of rare, 19th Century, quarter plate size, Union Case thermoplastic photoframes with ambrotypes of a husband, wife and child. Probably English or French.

These excellent black union frames are not listed by Berg and are a beautiful example of an early plastic photograph frame. They are marked 'Lionite'

Overall condition is very good with one perfect, with no damage to the plastic, the other having a hairline crack across the left side with a small chip on the ribbed surround.

The rear of the frames have the original covers, with hinged card supports. One frame has a damage section where the metal rod fits (see images)

A 1/4 plate sized ambrotype, with original seal, is housed in each frame.

One shows a seated man seated wearing simple, but formal clothing. The other shows his wife with a child.

Both images are in excellent condition, sharp and strong with good contrast and detail.

Both frames have their original glass covers.

There is no indication of the subjects nor the photographer, but both images are marked in ink on the rear 'Taken 5th August 1858'

These are good sized, finely presented frames, which can either stand or hang.

Frame Size approx 8x6ins (20x15cms).

Visible Image size approx 3.75x2.75ins (9.5x7.5cms)
