An excellent and attractive English Victorian aneroid barometer set into a carved oak Black Forest surround. The large decorative barometer face is made from white glass with beautiful hand painted lettering. There is some very slight fading in parts of the lettering, but it is very minor and almost unnoticeable (see close up images) The main pointer is made from brass and the subsidiary pointer is made from blued steel. An original, rare brown thermoplastic or gutta percha thermometer stand, made from the same composition material as Union Cases, probably manufactured in France in the 1860s It is elaborately designed as a heavily moulded arch with columns supporting a pierced pediment, flanked by floral pillaster and scrolled borders. The top is surmounted by a knight's helmet. It is all in exceptionally fine condition, with no damage or cracks of any kind.
