Carl Erickson began the Erickson Glass Works in Bremen Ohio from 1943-1961. Mr. Erickson was a Master Glass Blower and previously had worked at Pairpont, Libbey and Blenko. He was known for his attention to detail and finished or supervised the finishing of each almost every piece.
This compote is produced in crystal and smoke, a lovely soft gray brown black coloring. It sits atop a crystal controlled bubble base. The compote measures a total of 4 3/8" tall and 6 3/4" wide. The top, smoke colored portion of the compote is slightly concave. The controlled bubble crystal paperweight base has small bubbles forming a "moving" pattern throughout.
I believe this to be an earlier piece of Mr. Erickson, as noted in Ramona and Franklin Knower's book "Erickson Freehand Glass", these bubbles are a bit larger than those of later pieces.
The base bottom is cut and polished smooth. It is very sturdy on any surface and is heavy for its size.
Very good condition, a few rub marks to the top that must be seen in bright light and at the correct angle. There are no chips, cracks or fleabites.
