The wonderful quilt is in a style often referred to as "controlled crazy" because it's worked in blocks which, well, control the craziness some, rather than having it spread out unrestrained over the entire surface. We can tell it's c.1900-20 or so because it's not worked in fancy silks but in a variety of suitings, and while it's got some embroidered motifs most of the embellishment is reserved for the seams. This wonderful antique quilt is entirely handstitched and is in fabulous condition. This pattern has been known by a variety of names including "Six-Sided Patchwork" and "Hexagon Patchwork." An 1856 novel by Catharine Brooks Yale describes a "Job's Troubles" quilt made from red, yellow and various colored calicoes cut into hexagons.
