This fabulous parasol dates to the mid 1800's and would have been used by a fashionable lady of the day while riding in her carriage to shield her delicate complexion from the sun. It's incredibly dainty and feminine and the detail is just beautiful. The handle is either bone or ivory, and is carved with a gorgeous rose and twining leaf design. The finial is the same material. The wonderful quilt is in a style often referred to as "controlled crazy" because it's worked in blocks which, well, control the craziness some, rather than having it spread out unrestrained over the entire surface. This wonderful antique quilt is entirely handstitched and is in fabulous condition. This pattern has been known by a variety of names including "Six-Sided Patchwork" and "Hexagon Patchwork." I can't tell you how pleased I am to offer this wonderful collection of Annie Irwin's lacemaking projects. Annie was born in 1869 in Coles County, Illinois, the daughter of Civil War Officer Samuel Shepard Irwin and Sarah Noyes. I purchased these, and other family items, from Annie's great niece, who gave me the family history which I then researched through various genealogical resources.
