Circa 1890-1905, this stunning natural diamond and sapphire pin is in fantastic, wearable condition for its age! Featuring 26 old mine, old single and old European cut diamonds and one thrillingly blue natural cushion-cut sapphire, this antique keeper weighs a solid 4.20 grams and acid-tests as 18k white gold. I took it to my gemologist today for him to confirm the gold content, as well as the sapphire.
The pin, from end to end, measures right around 2 inches, at 52.04mm. The diamond and sapphire section measures 28.97mm of that 52mm, and is 10.42mm at its widest point. Typical of old mine/Euro cuts, judging carat weight is a little difficult, however, most measure around 1.6mm (2pts), with the largest around 2.20mm (3pts). We estimate, by gauge only, that the diamond carat weight falls around 0.55-0.60cts, possibly more due to the height and 'fat' cuts of these beautiful old diamonds. Their color is bright white G-H-I, and their clarity ranges on average Si1 to I1. They truly glisten at every angle!
The natural sapphire measures approximately 4.2mm square and is an incredible royal blue. My gemologist stated today that it is a 'beautiful' sapphire with great color. Given its age, there is very slight facet wear on the gem, only visibly under close magnification however, and in no way jeopardizing the integrity of the sapphire.
All gold is white, and again, tests as 18kt by acid testing. There are 2 engravings (too light to be able to photograph unfortunately): on one end of the pin, 'scratched' by hand it reads 'XOII', the other end ' 746'. I don't know what either indicates...probably maker's marks.
The only true wear is the pin rod itself. It isn't perfectly straight anymore, but once pinned into clothing or a hat, no one will even come close to seeing the slight bends in it.
Just beautiful - what a treat of an antique!!!
