This lovely rolled gold bookchain necklace was given to a Marion V. Fox in 1877. This information is inscribed on the back of the beautifully ornate pendant which features a 9mm X 4mm carved coral cameo of a woman in its center.
The full necklace measures about 15", including the pendant which houses the hidden clasp typical of this bookchain style which was so popular in the Victorian period. This particular necklace is more petite than others we've sold here, in that the little book links are 1/8" or 2.5mm square (others are up to 1/4" square) making the necklace somewhat more delicate looking. But while it may look delicate, that's no reflection of its construction: it's well-made and in excellent condition with no welds or replaced links. Bear in mind this necklace is nearly 130 years old ... WOW!
So if you love some history in your antique jewelry, this one is well worth the investment. Maybe you could even research Marion V. Fox. Who knows? Maybe you'll even locate a relative. Now wouldn't that be something!
