SOLD 17" Vintage Japanese Gofun Ichimatsu Doll

This is a beautiful 17" vintage Japanese Ichimatsu play doll. Ichimatsu dolls typically represent little girls or boys, with correct proportions, flesh-colored skin and glass eyes. The head, arms, and legs are made from gofun. Gofun is a gesso-like substance made from ground oyster shell and binders and used to create a satin smooth finish on the head and limbs.

This doll has typical well formed facial features and delicately painted hair and lips. The brown eyes are glass. The torso is made from the same material as the limbs. The limbs are connected by stuffed and wired fabric. The torso is wrapped in brown paper which helps give the kimono shape. Tabi socks are worn on the feet.

The kimono and obi are replacements made from vintage silk kimono fabric.

Condition: There is a place on the doll's left forehead where some skin coloring is lacking. There are a few smudges on the sides of the head. There is a crack or slight separation across the top of the head along the seam line. There is also a slight crack on the right arm and right foot. The back of the right foot has a white patch where the tabi sock was originally glued down. The tabi socks are slightly discolored on the toes.
