This is a Grodnertal type doll. The term Grondertal comes from the village Gröden Tal on the Austrian/ Italian border. It has been famous for wood carving since the 1600s. Dolls of this type were made here and in the German Sonneberg area from the early to mid 1900s. Later evolving into the simpler peg wooden or penny wooden dolls that were still being made well into the 20th century.

This particular example dates from circa 1840s. She is 13" tall. She has articulated joints at shoulder, elbow, hip and knee. Her waist is narrow and she has a defined breast plate area. The lower legs and arms have rounded definition. The hands are simple mits with a separate thumb. Her feet are painted as black low heeled boots. The hair is very simply defined. Her face is simply and hastily painted, but not crudely done.

Her clothing is all original. It includes pantalettes with the lower part buttoned on, a petticoat skirt, and a slip with an attractive lace trim around the neckline.

Condition: Some paint loss to the hair, especially in the back, the back of the boot heels, and the nose area. Slight soiling of the painted finish. Age discoloration of the clothing and a couple of brown stains on the back of the skirt. Overall good condition for the age and type of doll.
