This is one of the vintage ethnic dolls that I currently have available. This finely made and elaborately beaded doll stands 17" tall to the top of her tall headdress. She is believed to represent a young woman from South Africa.
Her body is made from firmly stuffed brown wool felt. The head is shaped by 3 seam construction and has applied ears. This youthful young lady even has perky breasts stitched on her chest.
She is wearing a black wool felt skirt. Extensive bead work creates the rest of her costume. She has beaded bands around both ankles and one wrist. Her skirt has strips of vertical beading and is edged with it as well. Two wide open weave bands of bead work go across the doll's back and chest. She has a fine beaded necklace and earrings. The crowning touch is the 3" of beading that encloses her headdress. Wonderful!
Condition: I find 5 very small moth holes in the brown wool covering the body, each about the size of a pencil tip. All bead work appears to be intact. The inked detail of the facial features, ie. nose and eyebrows, may be slightly faded. The brown color inked around the pupils of the eyes doesn't quite match.
What a fabulous ethnic doll!
