New items added this week and more coming in mid August. My vacation break will be 7/26-8/16. Have a wonderful summer!
The term milliner's model is a misnomer, though used by many collectors. These were play dolls, not made for shop displays Though I speculate that this particular black gentleman might have been specially created for use in a creche scene.
I can't see the body to detail it, but it has the shape common to these dolls. Most early papier mache dolls had slender kid leather bodies with wooden arms and legs. His body is probably either kid leather or cloth. He has the typically shaped wooden arms and legs, but painted black to match his complexion. His shoulder plate is snugly encased in his clothing but feels intact.
He is wearing his original, sewn on and never removed, clothing. He is wearing 3/4 length pants in a vivid turkey red color, and matching tunic. The fabric feels to me like a cotton and wool blend. The tunic has deep cuffs and a high color. The outfit is trimmed in orange silk that is shattered. He has separate shirt cuffs and pleated shirt. Topping the ensemble off is a tasseled cap in the same fabric.
Condition: The orange silk trim is disintegrating. There is a scratch through the paint on his left front leg. The fabric of his hat shows wear. The front side of his clothing is slightly faded. He has a small nose rub on his face.
When will you see another like this?
