This wicked looking fellow is an amazing early antique papier mache doll. He was made by the German doll maker Andreas Voit circa 1840s. This type of doll is often referred to as "Pauline type". It is hard to find these dolls dressed as males. He retains most of his original costume. The shoulder head has glass eyes and an open mouth with teeth.

The doll measures almost 15" tall. I have never removed the stitched on clothing, and as far as I can tell it never has been removed. My only view of the body is through the holes in his stockings, which reveals a pink cotton cloth body. His hands are simple rudimentary wooden sticks, and the doll's right "hand" has been broken off.

Clothing: The hat and shoes have been added. The rest of the clothing is original. He is wearing moth eaten woolen hose, white cotton knickers/pants, a white cotton shirt (not visible), a buttoned flannel tunic with self fabric attached vest, a burgundy brocade silk outer vest, a black felted wool outer jacket, and lace collar and cuffs. I added the swashbuckling wool felt hat, and white kid leather shoes.

Condition: The stockings have multiple holes. The silk trim on both vests and tunic are melting, There is some age discoloration to the lighter colored garments. There are 3 small holes in the top front of the doll's head where a wig or hat was once nailed in place. There are 4 areas on top of the head with paint loss. There is a tiny paint chip on the side of the nose. Minor paint fading to facial features. The doll's right wooden hand is broken off. All minor flaws for a doll of this age, rarity and originality.

Truly an amazing find.
