AT AUCTION Antique Victorian Ivory Locket with Painted Miniature Portrait

This is a simple elegant ivory locket containing a miniature painted portrait. The oval locket measures 52mm x 28mm, including the round swivel bail. A yellow metal rope decorates the interior of the frame around the portrait. The portrait is painted on ivory and is beneath glass. The locket weighs 9 g.

The subject is a bearded man in 3/4 view facing right, in a dark coat, vest and cravat. He is a distinctive gentleman. The painting is so well executed I initially assumed it was a hand colored photograph of the period. It was only when I magnified it that I realized it is a completely hand painted portrait. A highly skilled artist painted this portrait.
