I purchased this rice box from a Louisiana Plantation estate. I know very little about wood products or about this piece except that the estate manager told me it was an early 1920's rice box. I fell in love with it! It looks primitive to me and the corners and bottom have lots of metal reinforcements. It has tongue and groove corners, square top with curved sides and a straight center bar handle. It appears some repair was done to the bottom as the wood began splitting as there are quite a few metal reinforcements there. This rice box was definitely used, the patina is wonderful and I think it is still as sturdy as the day it was made! I have attempted to take pictures from all angles and if you have additional questions, please email. The box is 14" x 14" across the top. It is 10" tall and the bottom is 9" x 9". These exact measurements reflect excellent craftsmanship for the time period. This lovely piece has many uses ~ magazine box, towel box, floral arrangements and best of all, simply a wonderful decorator accent or conversational piece!
