Mildred's of Hawaii made some excellent contemporary tiki wear in the 60s and 70s; this amazing dress is smart example of just that!
This is made of 100% textured acrylic (made to assimilate the bark cloth texture so popular in the 40s) in a fabulous super bright floral print of purples, electric orange, sunshine yellow and brilliant pinks with tiny accents of white.
It is considered a muu muu, or long dress, with Holoku details (the deep pleated back which adds controlled fullness, and makes it easier for the wearer to walk). It has a sweet ruffle trimmed neckline, and empire waist with front bow. Darts from the waist line add shape for the fitted bodice which is flattering and flirty!
This is labeled a size 12 (vintage), however we all know the vintage sizing ran much smaller than our sizing now. Laid flat, the measurements are:
19" across front underarms (~38" bust) 15.5" at empire seam (~30") 12" from shoulder seam to empire seam ~53" from shoulder seam to hem ~15.25" from shoulder point to shoulder point ~72" around bottom of hem.
We would estimate this to be an approximate contemporary size 8, or small. Some consider an 8 medium, though, so please compare measurements to those of your own.
The bodice is lined in a sheer, lightweight white muslin. It has a 22" plastic Coats & Clark zipper up the center back.
This is a fabulous dress, super colorway, excellent print, and in like-new pristine condition. Mai Tai, anyone?
