The top portion of this rose bowl is made of clear glass that is 1/8 inch thick, and has a strong inner optic pattern. The bowl sits atop a tall base, made of frosted Neodymium glass. Neodymium is a type of dichroic, discovered in 1885, which means showing two different colors. In daylight or incandescent light, the base is the purest lavender color. ( If the lighting is extremely bright, it shows a beautiful rose pink color.) However, when placed under fluorescent lighting, it is a pale bluish-gray. Many of the best glass companies produced pieces made of this Neodymium glass, as did several fine jewelry companies. As for dating this piece, I can only say that it is vintage, c. pre 1950's. It has been in my family since then, and I'm not sure where it originally came from or when. The clear glass bowl is approximately 6 inches round, and measures 3 3/4 inches across the opening at the top. The top edge is beautifully polished. The total height is 8 inches. It is heavy, weighing close to 3 lbs. There is slight shelf wear on the bottom, along with several light scratches, as you would expect to find. Other than that, condition is extremely fine. It is very rare to find a piece of vintage Neodymium glass in any form, particularly to find it in a piece as exquisite as this!
