This beautiful red glass swan dish was made by the Cambridge Glass Company. These popular & beautiful swans were put into production in about 1928, and instantly became one of Cambridge's most highly sought-after pieces! They continued making the swans until around 1943. The swans were made in many colors and in many sizes. Cambridge called this red color "Carmen". Cambridge changed the styling of their swans several times during the 50 or so years of production. There is Type I, Type II and Type III, and subtle variations in each type. Because of the intricate wing detail, I believe this to be a type II swan. This is a somewhat large serving piece, measuring a total length of 9 inches, and a width of 5 3/4 inches. It is 5 5/8 inches tall, at the top of the swans neck. My late grandmother was a major collector of elegant glass from companies such as Fostoria, Cambridge and Duncan Miller. This is a piece from her collection, so I can guarantee its authenticity. It spent its whole life in her china closet. There is a foil Cambridge label on the tail feather area. I have spent several years trying to find another "Carmen" red Cambridge swan, in this size, to no avail. Of the many books and websites I have used to research Cambridge swans, I couldn't find any value information for this "Carmen" red color in this size. Therefore to the best of my knowledge this is a very rare piece. If anyone can share more insight on these wonderful glass swans, please email me. Condition on this one is absolutely pristine, guaranteed.
