1911 Washington & Old Dominion RW Bond Certificate. Very attractive bond with trolley vignette. The Washington and Old Dominion was a short-line railroad located in Northern Virginia with an interesting and complicated history. Running parallel to the Potomac River, this railroad's main line extended from Alexandria, VA to Bluemont at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Snickers Gap at the Virginia and West Virginia border. It started in 1855 as the Alexandria, Loudoun and Hampshire Railroad, and had several other names (Washington and Ohio Railroad, Washington and Western Railroad, and the Washington, Ohio and Western) in the post Civil War period. On weekends in the late 1800s, express trains carried vacationers from Washington to resorts in Bluemont and other towns in western Loudoun County. In 1906, electric trolleys were introduced on a branch line (the Great Falls and Old Dominion Railroad) from Washington, D.C. through Arlington and Fairfax County to an amusement park that the railway constructed and operated near Great Falls. In 1911, the Great Falls and Old Dominion RR was reorganized, forming (finally) the Washington and Old Dominion Railway. Parts of the Washington and Old Dominion system continued in operation until the 1960s. Today, The Washington & Old Dominion Railroad Trail follows much of the railroad's route. (Source: Wikipedia)
