1869 Indianapolis & Vincennes RR Stock Certificate. Issued to and signed (twice) by Ambrose E. Burnside (1824-1881), Union Civil War general. General Ambrose commanded the Army of Potomac (1862-1863). His military career was one of a few successes (for example, First Battle of Bull Run) and several spectacular failures (Antietam, Fredericksburg, and the Crater). Burnside subsequently opposed Lincoln for the Presidency in 1864, and after the war served as governor of Rhode Island and its Senator. His distinctive style of facial hair is now known as sideburns, derived from his last name. Certificate is in VF+ with a few punch cancellations.
