1885 Pine Creek RR $1000 bond signed by W. Vanderbilt and C. Depew. Attractive bond with vignettes of farmer and allegorical justice. Bond is signed by two important individuals in RR history. William K. Vanderbilt (1849-1920) was the grandson of the Commodore and a famous yachtsman (who owned and sailed the Defender in the 1895 Americas Cup race). He managed the Vanderbilt RR interests for many years. Chauncey Depew (1834-1928) was a railroad executive / director at dozens of RR companies. As a young man he was a well known orator, speaking on behalf of Abraham Lincoln in the 1860 election. In 1866, he was appointed Commodore Vanderbilt’s attorney and from there gradually became one of the most important RR executives in the late nineteenth century. He also served as a U.S. senator from 1899 to 1911. Certificate is in VF+ condition, with punch hole cancels, which touch on both signatures.
