Dog tin types are very rare. Remember the animal had to sit still for the better part of a minute to get the shot. Furthermore, the expense of paying for a photograph of your pet was not within the reach of the average citizen.
This one shows a black dog, perhaps a lab with a white spot on his belly. He is posing very obediently on a fringed Victorian chair, probably velvet, that looks to be 1870's vintage.
The photo is housed in a brown leather case with an embossed floral design on both the front and back covers. The case has double latches and a red velvet embossed inner cover.
The piece measures 3 5/8" by 3 1/4". The photo is in good clear condition with one small dark line near the edge. The case hinge has been rebound in leather, and the inner velvet is somewhat faded. Both latches are intact.
