The brooch or pin is made of Gutta Percha or Bois Durci a material first invented in the mid 19th century and considered the first "plastics". It is very similar to vulcanite.
This Victorian piece has a lovely profile of a Bacchante with grapes and leaves in her flowing tresses. It has a "c" clasp closure with an extended pin, which helps verify its 19th century manufacture.
The brooch measures 2" by 1 3/4", a substantial size. It is in nice vintage condition with a few light scratches to the background near the top. It has retained its black color and does not appear faded. The back has the original English label (see pictures).
