Unusual art nouveau design on this fantastic 5 1/2 inch high Nippon moriage mug. The thistle design is unusual to find on moriage pieces indicating an art nouveau style and dating it to the very beginning of the 20th century. The lower portion of the piece shows pansies in beautiful hues of lilac and yellow with background colors of blue and green. This is a wonderful ewer, made in Japan in the late 19th century. It is a form of Nippon known as moriage because of its raised slip-work designs. The ewer has a green background with gorgeous hand painted orchids done in shades of purple and yellow. This fabulous Nippon moriage vase was made between approximately 1895 and 1905, in a style called Art Nouveau. It has two small handles and a scalloped top. The base is also scalloped.
