This sweet antique painting has three baby kittens merrily at play. They are frisking around a handled basket, and their play tools are all around them: thimble, yarn balls, needle, and darner. Their curious little faces are just incredibly precious, and the detail work superb. Even their fur is finely rendered. One kitten gazes intently into the basket, while another's eyes look directly at the painting viewer, drawing the onlooker to their play. The painting is signed, but hard to read--could be F. J. Bonnielle (or Donnielle?) In any case, this painting was completed on a fine linen canvas with a mid to late 19th century stretcher system (verified by Jean Stern at the Irvine Museum). In most cases, only a professional artist would spend the money for a very fine linen canvas.

It is of French origin, as evidenced by the "Paris" stamp on the back, with wording of "Rue de..." imprint. The manufacturer was Perrot. The canvas size is 12.75 x 16 inches, and the overall size with the gilded frame is 18 x 21.5 inches. It is in very good condition, recently cleaned and revarnished, found in Boston, Massachusettes. As with a mid 19th Century painting, there is some crazing, typical of a piece this old (please see photos). It is a beautiful French painting, no doubt very well cared for, and it is museum quality.
