This is a magnificent and RARE collection of two framed Theodore Roosevelt prints from 1905. The first print is entitled "On The Track", and features Roosevelt on horseback, with his dogs accompanying him, gun in hand, and heavily into the hunt. Behind Roosevelt, are several companions, also on horseback, with bowler hats and in pursuit of some game at long last. It is well known that Roosevelt rallied Legislative votes for the procurement and preservation of thousands of acres of National Parks, such as Yellowstone Park.
The second antique print is called "The Bear at Bay", and shows Roosevelt in the snow, having found his target, a black bear. The dogs have already arrived on the scene, and one has been dealt a mortal blow under the bear's left paw. Here's some news on the second print. Although sporting a rifle, Roosevelt became a legend in 1902 when he refused to shoot an entrapped bear, back in the swamps of Mississippi. Teddy instead ordered one of his companions to put the bear out of its misery. In time, this act became well known to the press, and out of it was borne the "Teddy Bear" craze we know of today.
Both of these prints are antique chromolithographs, circa 1905, issued by McLaughlin Brothers Company (coffee roasters).
Each print measures aprox 15 x 20 inches. They are *MINT*, no ripples, tears, repairs, watermarks, glitter, fading, or other unsightly blemishes. Both prints lay flat. The colors are as vivid and as beautiful as the day these prints were produced, over 100 years ago. The framing job is superb, all of the materials are archival--with UV plexiglass, acid-free faux grey leather mat, and complimentary gorgeous burl wood frame. To find one of these prints is fabulous, but two, absolutely excellent!
These prints come from a private collection, and are quite RARE. Recent auctions record EACH PRINT at a price range of $800. Then add on the gorgeous framing. The overall size of this framed piece measures 28.5 x 41.5 inches.
A bit of history on how chromolithographs were made: Chromolithographs were very labor intensive to make, as a stone was required for each color layer. Layers upon layers of oil-based inks give the color an almost pearly sheen, rich, even bleeding somewhat to the backside. As many as 20 stones may have been required to make a single print. All of the color transfers had to align in perfect "register", or the image would be blurry. This one is right on. Color prints changed over to what we now know as photolithography around 1900. By 1910, chromo's were virtually phased out. Please note that shipping is an estimate, and will be adjusted if needed at checkout.
