This is a wonderful pre-prohibition antique poster print by Paul de Longpre, the celebrated French Victorian watercolorist from the Victorian period. It is an immense, HUGE, large print with big cabbage roses, a beer schooner, a lighted cigar, and an urn overflowing with roses and hops! The text reads: COMPLIMENTS OF THE JACOB HOFFMAN BREWING CO ORIENTAL BREWERY, 204-218 E. 55TH N.Y., CANADA MALT ALES AND PORTER, PINK AND RED ROSES AND BERRY-LIKE PLANT IN A BLUE URN MARKED "EXTRA WIENER LAGER BEER" TRADEMARK WITH STAR AND CRESCENT MOTIF. The artwork is typical Paul de Longpre style, exceptional in every detail. This image was issued by the J. Ottman Lithographic Company. It is a 100-year old chromolithograph, and in near mint condition.
This is an unsigned print, not unusual when an artist worked for a firm. Often the signature was omitted, so that another firm wouldn't know who the artist was and steal them away! Or, the artist had the signature omitted, as they did not want folks to think they were endorsing the firm. This is without a doubt a de Longpre, the artwork speaks for itself loud and clear, and there is another painting with this same identical ledge, and that one is signed by de Longpre. Please note: the white streaks you see are just flash glare, not on the print.
This exceptional piece measures 21 x 31 inches unframed, HUGE! Shipping will be in a hard mailing tube.
In the old chromolithographs, a stone was made for each color. The stones were then applied with oil-based inks. As many as 20 stones may have been required to complete a color image. All of them had to align in perfect "register" or the image would be blurry. This one is right on. The print has a nice sheen when tilted side to side, rich with the oil based inks. Chromolithography was the dominant technology to make color prints from 1850 to 1910. By 1910, chromo's had virtually disappeared, as they were very labor intensive to make, and were subsequently replaced by photolithography, the method we use now.
Yes, it is an oldie, I acquired several of these many years ago, and have a couple I'll let go. Please note: Shipping is an estimate at the parcel post rate, we'll adjust if needed at checkout for you.
