You are looking at an absolutely stunning antique celluloid box; I have never seen one so ornate, plus the entire box is celluloid. Better yet, it has never been used! I would date this celluloid box to the early 1900’s.
This curved celluloid box is LARGE, measuring 16 ¾” long, 11” wide & 4 ¾” high; all dimensions are taken at their longest/highest points.
As you can see, the top of the box features three raised embossed yellow roses, some buds & leaves. The top also features ornate raised scrollwork, done in green with lavender flowers. The front & sides feature the scrollwork as well; the back is solid pink celluloid. The scrollwork, along with the yellow roses, is absolutely breathtaking!
The box has a wonderful curved design, as you can see by my photos.
The front features two antique gold closures, which work perfectly.
The inside is simply stunning & is in near mint condition. If you’ve ever wondered what the inside of an antique celluloid box looked like new, this is it. The lining is done in shirred pink satin & features a beveled mirror on the lid portion. There is light fogging to the mirror. Because the mirror is heavy & due to the age of the piece, the glue on the back of the mirror, which would have held the mirror in place, has dried, thus it needs to be pushed back in place once you open the box up.
There are still nine vanity pieces remaining; a comb, hand mirror, nail buffer, two rouge pots, a toothbrush, nail file & two pieces I am unfamiliar with. I believe the only piece missing is the hair brush. The pieces are all in excellent condition and have never been used. The only minor imperfection is to the hand mirror, which shows minor moisture damage to a small portion of the mirror. As you can, the hand mirror has ornate detail work & most of the other pieces have braided handles. The lining is also near mint, with only minor wear/breaks in the satin, where the vanity items are held. There are no stains or odors.
The condition of the celluloid is also near mint, with absolutely no cracks or splits. There is a very teensy edge chip to the front, on the top right. It is so minor & is only being noted for complete accuracy.
If you are a celluloid collector, then I would have to say this is a must have; I have never seen another piece that comes close to this one. It is truly outstanding in every way.
