Vintage C. 20’s Gesso Wooden Magazine Holder w/Ornate Oriental Design

As you know, the Victorians loved to mix oriental style pieces with their heavily carved furniture. Although this piece dates to the 20’s, it still has that wonderful Victorian, Oriental design/look to it, which blends perfectly with so many styles.

You are looking at the most fabulous, ornate C. 20’s wooden magazine holder. These are very difficult to find, especially in excellent condition.

As you can see, it features very ornate raised gesso work, done in an Oriental motif. Better yet, the ornate gesso detail is on all four sides! The front and back feature the same scene: a castle with three burnt orange flags flying on the top of a castle. The weeping willow type tree is just dripping with flowers, done in burnt orange. The brown tree trunk, roots & branches are done in thick brown gesso. There is a yellow/brown sun peeking through the tree branches. The lower portion features some burnt orange flowers, against a dark green “grass” background. Again, this scene is repeated on the opposite side.

The sides feature two floral branches, as well as a mountain range beneath it.

The condition is very good. There is extremely minor loss of gesso flowers, and loss of varnish at the top of the handle, which is due from lifting it. As to be expected, there is overall “crackling” to the wood, but I don’t consider this a flaw. It is being mentioned for complete accuracy. There are some very minor nicks, mainly along the edges, an easy fix with a wood stain marker, if desired.

This piece is 19” high, 12 3/8” across & 10 ½” deep.
