General Winfield Scott was one of our most distinguished soldiers! He grew up in Virginia and fought in the War of 1812. He was badly wounded at Lundy's lane and became an international hero. He became commander-in-chief of the army in 1841 and was the acknowledge genius of the Mexican War. He ran for President in 1852 but was defeated by Franklin Pierce. He conceived the "Anaconda Plan" which in essence became the overall Federal strategy in 1864 -65. Scott requested retirement in 1861 after General McClellan was made commander of the Army of the Potomac. He died in 1866. On the back of the CDV it says this photo was taken at West Point on June 10, 1862.
