SOLD C1880 Portrait Brooch of NAPOLEON'S EMPRESS, Hand-Painted Porcelain
An ethereal portrait of a an early 19th century royal beauty is hand-painted on this large porcelain brooch. The image most likely depicts a Josephine de Beuaharnais (later, Bonaparte) or Marie Louise, the second wife of Napoleon. The two women had very similar features and, of course, wore the same trend-setting high styles of the period. The portrait-in-frame measures 2 3/8” high by 2 1/16” wide and is entirely hand-painted (not a hand-touched, transfer). The dreamy pastel artwork depicts the serene brunette with rosy cheeks wearing an impressive ruby and pearl crown and pale lavender veil with lace scrolls around her face. (Perhaps it is her wedding day?) She also wears a matching ruby pendant with pearl drops. The light green background continues the soothing palette of the portrait which is farmed in a draped-ribbon brass bezel mounting. The circa 1880 brooch has a C-clasp with extended pin shaft. The porcelain plaque itself has “26” impressed in it, most likely the blank number of the European maker. The brooch is in wonderful condition with very pleasing tones and the allure of a royal history.
