This circa 1890 Japanese gilt brass stickpin shows the Eastern influence on jewelry design during the Aesthetic Movement of the late 19th century when naturalism and asymmetry were favored. The stickpin’s loosely oval top is ¾” high and a little more than ½” wide and has a dark golden finish over brass. The intentionally oxidized design of clouds is set with three bright rose pink glass cabochons. The characters below may be a form of good luck; I could only translate one as a sort of blessing in modern Chinese (which is related to an older Japan language system used prior to 1900.)

The full height of the stickpin is 2 5/8” and the side of the shaft has a partial stamp of maker’s hallmark which is not decipherable. The stickpin is in lovely condition with no damage and the only wear to the gilding being on the upper part of the pin shaft.

This special accessory comes in a box which itself is a special display item. It is blue velvet with a satin-lined lid showing the jeweler’s name and address. The bottom is a darker blue velvet with a pocket for the stickpin (which could hold other pins too!). It closes with a push clasp, the button is carved mother-of-pearl shell. The box, too, is in super condition with no evidence of wear.
