This is a fabulous Sterling Silver Gilt Compact – Necessaire.
This beautiful cat is done in very high relief giving it a three dimensional effect. The cat is very puffy with such incredible
attention paid to detail you can see every hair on this very fluffy Cat. The adorable face is gazing straight at you making him so irresistible. He just seems to be saying, will you take me home? His beautiful eyes are set with cabochon Rubies giving him such an appealing look. His great bushy tail is curling over the edge of the Compact and one ear is also above the frame giving balance and symmetry to this wonderful box. The reverse of the box is the back of the Cat. Again it has incredible detail , very high relief and such detail that you can count every hair. The tail starts to curl and then you can see the back of the tail which is hanging over the edge of the front. A wonderful flow to the design. A great three dimensional box.
The Necessaire opens with two cabochon rubies set on the side. The interior is done in heavy gilt over the silver giving it an almost gold appearance in contrast to the outside of the box which is very light silver gilt. When opened there is a mirror on one side, which I replaced because the original mirror was cracked, otherwise you would not know that it was not original. This compartment is easy to open because it has the Cabochon Ruby tab. When opened there is a bright cut decorative spring catch. The other side has celluloid Writing Tablet. On the opposite side of the open compact are two hinged compartments, one for powder the other for rouge. The larger compartment has the mark on the rim of 900 for silver, Crown & Crescent mark for Germany after 1886. 451 pattern number. The Box is circa 1900.
Very heavy gauge silver, even allowing for the weight of the
mirror, it weighs 6 troy ounces. The necesssaire measures
3 1/8” x 2” x 1.2”. The original chain is 12” long and there is a catch so it can be fastened in a loop to wear over your wrist as an evening purse. The condition is very good, good sharp detail with no dings or dents. The only thing missing is a very slim pencil which would fit into a hole in the top. A most wonderful item of the finest quality.
