This antique colonial rocking cradle dates from the late 1800's and was purchased at auction on Martha's Vineyard, from a ship captain's estate. It was made by the ship captain back then and has been passed down within the family, rocking many a happy baby, until about 6 years ago. I have had it in my collection since then. The wood is either oak or maple, fairly heavy, but not as much as mahogany. It is solidly constructed with dove tail (or) tongue and groove corners. Original finish. There are carved out handles near the covered "hood" on both sides. This cradles shows normal wear, and the only repair is shown in the last photograph, where one cradle rocker has been spliced together, however, it was done quite well and does not compromise its function. The cradle includes a custom made to fit foam cushion, with a pale yellow, bound edge, zippered cover, which is washable in cold water.
This fabulous baby cradle is still perfect for sleepy infants (I would recommend putting small "bumpers" inside or rolled up blankets) or would be lovely for displaying dolls in a bed for the collector.
This antique cradle measures 41" inches long X 21 1/4" inches wide (takes up 26" width of space with the rockers), 29" inches high (with hood), and the inside of the bed (sleeping space) measures 12 1/2" inches wide X 35 1/2" inches long. Please inquire about cost of shipping.
