Each snake head earring is covered in various iridescent shades of green. Using a loupe, there are an amazing amount of blues, greens, yellows and oranges – a confetti of brilliant colors – very intricate enameling. The eyes are inlaid black onyx. One neck is marked: "MARGOT DE TAXCO 5554". The other neck is marked with Margot's eagle hallmark and "HECHO EN MEXICO" (Cannot make out the number inside the eagle).
Excellent condition. These sterling silver-enamel snake earrings are 7/8" inches at their widest point and 2 1/4" inches long.
Bit O' History: Many collectors believe Mexican jewelry is highly undervalued in price, especially the work of the women artists such as Margot van Voorhies Carr (Margot de Taxco), Matilde Poulat (whose work is marked MATL), and Ana Brillanti (whose work is marked Victoria).
An example of the influences of these female artists in the 30-40’s is on the shape of the bracelets. Before the work of Margot, Matilde and Ana, jewelry was designed by men and therefore, bracelets were shaped to a man’s wrist. These women not only changed the shape of Mexican jewelry, they made it more feminine in design.
Margot de Taxco pieces are highly collected and exhibit unique design and craftsmanship. She created many of the early designs for Los Castillo while married to Antonio Castillo, and later had several talented designers work for her including Miguel Melendez and Sigi Pineda.
